DePaul basketball welcomes new season

The DePaul Blue Demons welcome a new era of men’s and women’s basketball, thanks to the leadership and experience of men’s head coach Oliver Purnell and women’s head coach Doug Bruno.

The women, playing on campus at McGrath Arena in the Sullivan Athletic Center, open their season by hosting the opening round of the Preseason WNIT against Valparaiso on Nov. 12, and then host the Maggie Dixon Classic Nov. 26-27. The men open their season on campus against Chicago State on Nov. 14.

Coach Purnell builds contenders
Purnell, the 13th men’s basketball head coach in Blue Demons history, already has fulfilled his promise of bringing some of the NCAA’s top mentors to DePaul and is excited to debut his “power staff.” Joining Purnell are his longtime associate Ron Bradley, who recruited a class nationally ranked by sports websites ESPNU, Rivals.com and Scout.com; Brian Ellerbe, former head coach of the Michigan Wolverines; and assistant coach Billy Garrett, who brings with him a decade of experience at the collegiate, high school and AAU levels.

Doug Bruno continues legendary career
Bruno, whose DePaul career spans 24 years, brings an impressive record that includes 15 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Out of 24 men’s and women’s Division I basketball programs in Illinois, the DePaul women’s team was the only one good enough to compete in the NCAA Tournament last year. DePaul will honor Bruno on Nov. 6, 2010, by officially naming McGrath Arena court as the Doug Bruno Court.

Tickets
Single-game and season tickets are available for both the men’s and women’s teams. The DePaul Ticket Office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located in the first floor lobby of the Sullivan Athletic Center at 2323 N. Sheffield Ave. on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus. For more information or to order tickets by phone, call (773) 325-SLAM (7526).
